Who is Jesus?

The beginning
God made you on purpose. He knows everything about you, and he loves you: not the version of you that has it all together, you.
What went wrong
Somewhere along the way, every one of us turned away from him and started living as if he didn't matter. The Bible calls that sin. It isn't only the wrong things we do; it's the broken relationship underneath them. And no amount of trying harder puts it back together.
What God did
So God came himself. Jesus, God's Son, became one of us. He lived the life none of us manage, died on a cross carrying everything we had done wrong, and on the third day he rose from the dead.
Where you come in
Anyone who turns to Jesus and trusts him is forgiven and gets a new life with God, one that starts now and doesn't end. You don't earn it, and you don't have to sort your life out first. That's what grace means: it's a gift. This whole story has a name: the Gospel. It means good news.
Six things people believe about God
“I'd have to earn it.”
Most of us treat love like a salary: be good enough, and you'll get some. God doesn't work that way. Jesus spent his time with people who had nothing to show for themselves, and he loved them first. That's what grace means: a gift, not a reward.
“I'm too far gone.”
Jesus told a story about a son who took his inheritance, wasted every bit of it, and came home hoping to be taken on as a hired hand. His father saw him from a long way off and ran to him. Nobody is too far gone for that father.
“My worth is what people see.”
Looks, likes, what you wear. We make clothes, so we know how much weight that carries. But people look at the outside, and God looks at the heart. You mattered to him long before anyone looked at you.
“Christianity is a list of rules.”
The religious experts of Jesus' day had plenty of rules, and Jesus kept annoying them: he healed people on the wrong day and ate with the wrong people. He invited everyone who was tired and weighed down to come to him. He came to take weight off, not to add it.
“Jesus was just a good teacher.”
Good teachers don't say they are the way to God. Jesus did, and he said he would rise from the dead. Either he was wrong about the biggest thing there is, or he is exactly who he said. “Just a good teacher” is the one option he didn't leave open.
“Christians think they're better than everyone.”
Some do, and they've missed the point. The whole message starts with admitting you needed rescuing. Paul, who wrote many of the letters in the Bible, called himself the worst of sinners. Christians aren't better people. They're forgiven people.
